 I still remember the first time I heard the British rock band, The 1975 like it was yesterday. I was sitting in the car at a red light as they came on the radio. I couldn’t help but think to myself “Who is this?!” and “My roomie is going to love this song!” (Considering the name of the song playing was “Chocolate” which is her favorite!) However, fate had something else in mind because it turned out I was the one who was hooked! I dove in immediately, listening to all of the songs from their first self titled album “The 1975” and couldn’t get enough! I fell in love with their unique sense of style, the black and white theme, Matt Healy’s melodic voice and the deep lyrics instantly.

Needless to say after swooning over their first album, there was no hesitation in ordering my copy of their newest album “I Like It When You Sleep For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It.” As the album began to download onto my computer, I could barely sit still I was so excited! Yet, I was still somewhat nervous. What if it wasn’t as great as I thought it would be? What if the change from black and white to pink and colorful had changed them? I had so many high expectations after falling so hard for this eccentric, edgy, and lyrical band. As the album began to play I knew I had wasted those small seconds of worry. The album was brilliant! The 1975 stayed true to themselves as they lured me into each song with emotion on topics that are deep and heavy but, original and executed with a flair and swagger that only they could pull off. It exceeded all of my expectations with superb guitar solos, beats you couldn’t help but tap your toe to, deep lyrics, and Matt Healy’s one of a kind sound.

There were tracks that pulled at your heartstrings like “Someone Else” with breathy vocals about moving on from a past relationship and “Nana” written about the sorrow that comes with the loss of a grandmother. While others were slightly more upbeat but still conveying their own message with 80’s like characteristics such as “Ugh!” “Love Me,” and my personal favorite “The Sound.”

It may have been just an ordinary day as I impatiently sat at that stop light but, those couple of minutes exposed me to the beginning of my ongoing love affair with The 1975. “I Like It When You Sleep For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It” a creative gold brick on the path of success The 1975 has paved and created for themselves.
